I hope it left a mark. The next ones gunna be a steel post filled with concrete. I'll cover it with wood so you don't know what hit you, or rather what you hit. I hope you come back for another.
this is just 1 week after I fixed it from the side walk plow mulching my previous post.

Time for some rebar-reinforced concrete. Sink it two feet, shape it square, slap some veneer on it, call it a day.

Make sure you fill the steel post with concrete. Then box it with wood and paint it.

One word BRICK. My old neighbors mailbox was a magnet for cars. After the third time in 6 months he built one out of bricks. Within 3 months it was hit again, but they didn't drive off THAT time.

my mailbox just had the shit kick out of it too! That just pisses me off to no end. What did my mailbox do to you?!
My wife won't let me drop $70 on a heavy duty, full steel, 20 pounder that I want to get, either...

Please do make that steel post mail box. I wish to see the results. My uncle helped a neighbor install a new mailbox a few years ago with concrete and steel reinforcement. My aunt then haphazardly backed out their driveway and right into the mailbox.
Fucking mailbox didn't even have a scratch on it, but it completely tore off the rear bumper as well the rear quarter panel.
Do it and post the aftermath when that fuckwad comes through a second time.

Back in the late 70s - early 80s we had a rash of this behavior in our neighborhood. Slashed tires, broken mailboxes, etc. After some detective work, Dad realized that they were driving up on the curb and mowing the boxes down (similar to what you found this morning)
He went to the hardware store and bought 5-6 feet of 3" pipe, and some cement.
I remember watching him dig the hole, pour the concrete, and slowly shovel concrete down the pipe with a garden spade before painting it black - All while mumbling some words I didn't quite understand at the time.
His dream was to wake up one morning and find a car impaled on it when he went out to get the paper. He even put both cars in the driveway each weekend to make it look tempting.
Unfortunately (for dad) they never came back.
...and haven't been back since. It's still there today - 35 years later.

concretes cheap. I even have a few bags left over from another project. I think I'm going to build a shell wit 1x6 boards and fill it up. Theres even 18" deep hole in the asphalt for an anchor.

yea i have a feeling i'm going to go through a lot of work for the same results. I'll probably have better luck just watching for someone with a messed up bumper and hood. That was a fresh p.t. 4x4 . It had to have left a mark.

He used a floor flange on the top of it, and cut down a piece of plywood to insert into the recessed bottom of the mailbox.

When our neighborhood was being harassed by kids doing this a number of people replaced theirs with big brick mail boxes. After that, the vandals took to chiseling the bricks out of the new mailboxes and chucking them through the owners windows. They finally got the cop's attention when they threw one into a room that was occupied by a 1st and 4th grader and nearly missed one of the kid's heads.
We went the other direction and replaced the pole with some plastic pipe and the box with a light plastic one. Mounted it to a little pad of concrete with some sacrificial clips. It got knocked over once after that with no damage and was then ignored.

Yeah, it was 20 or so years ago so I don't remember what the punishment was...but I do remember that it was front page news of the local paper. It was a few (2, 3, 4? don't remember) well off white high school douches from the boarding prep school that was just outside the town's limits so I'm sure they lawyered up pretty well.

It sadly won't work for you due to the sidewalk, but I saw the most brilliantly evil mailbox post not long ago.
It was basically an L made of 3"-4" I-beam with the bottom of the L buried about 6" underground facing back towards the driveway. When someone ran down the mailbox the top of the L would be pushed over and the lower part would rise up out of the ground and spear the underside of the vehicle right about where the oil or transmission pan is.

A lot of states require that mailbox posts break off easily in impact scenarios.
So check your local laws before building anything to substantial or you could end up getting sued and/or thrown in jail if someone gets hurt.

yea i'll check. Would that be town or USPS? I've seen a few granite posts so I couldn;t imagine concrete being banned.

I just called the town's post office. they said they actually like the granite posts so that they are sturdy.

I did a bit of research and apparently the USPS and Federal Highway Administration are the ones who recommend it, so that pretty much makes it country wide. I would not go against or disregard what they recommend because that could leave you wide open for a lawsuit if something happened. Below is a copy of what I found HERE .
If you're mounting a curbside mailbox on a post near the street, the support should be secure and safe. The best supports are designed to bend or fall away if a car hits them.
The Federal Highway Administration recommends…
A wooden mailbox support no bigger than 4" x 4"
A 2"-diameter standard steel or aluminum pipe
Bury your post no more than 24" deep, so it can give way in an accident.
Don't use potentially dangerous supports, such as...
Heavy metal pipes
Concrete posts
Farm equipment, such as milk cans filled with concrete
In areas with lots of snow, we suggest a semi-arch or extended arm-type support. That way, snowplows will be able to sweep under without knocking it down.

Yes, I could see where a granite post would serve pretty well and it would snap off in an impact too, so you should be safe enough using it.
